Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Prices

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Prices

You've probably heard of a gastric bypass, it is an increasingly common surgical weight loss procedure which works by reducing the size of the stomach and making the entire digestive system shorter. It is extremely effective but is also major surgery which can take a long time to heal and be extremely expensive.

What you may not have heard of is the Mini Gastric Bypass. This is a much shorter, simpler and less invasive process than the full thing, but has been shown to have excellent results. It is also considerably cheaper, which is why it has growing appeal amongst those looking for an effective weight loss solution without the very high cost and recovery implications associated with a full Gastric Bypass operation.

What is Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Mini Gastric bypass surgery (also known as a Loop Gastric Bypass) is performed by Laparoscopy, meaning small incisions made into the skin, one of which forms the access for a surgical telescope which is connected to a camera. It is a surgical method considered significantly safer and less risk-associated in the long term than open wound surgery. The operation involved making the stomach into two pouches, the top being very small, reducing the amount of food that can be taken at any one time, and bypass of the remaining stomach pouch. The digestive tract is then reconstructed to enable both stomach 'pouches' to drain into it.

A typical, post-operative hospital stay is between 3-5 days, although you can, in theory, leave after 24 hours. You can expect to be put on an exclusively liquid diet (Bariatric Diet) for some time, whilst slowly introducing solid foods. You will receive extensive aftercare as part of your package which will include follow up appointments to check you are healing well and access to advice in case you have any concerns.

Following surgery and the initial recovery period, part of your aftercare will be support groups which you should attend as these increase the chances of long-term, successful weight-loss.

How much does Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery cost?

In the UK, Mini Gastric Band surgery starts at around £7000 and can rise to as much as £15000. The price includes consultations, aftercare for up to two years, remedial surgery (rare) and the surgery itself. Compared to full Gastric Band surgery, which starts at a minimum £10000, the mini option really is good value for money. And when you compare the results versus the price with other, less major cosmetic surgery procedures, it is clear that the surgery is very good value.

It should be noted, however, that these are baseline prices and, as each individual has individual needs and considerations, the price will vary from person to person and from one location to another.
