Macrolane Injections for Breast Enlargement

What is Macrolane?

First appearing on the UK market in 2008, Macrolane VRF (Volume Restoration Factor) is a product developed to be used in breast enhancement, for patients unwilling to undergo the invasive surgery associated with silicone implants. Pioneered by the 'Q Med' Company, who also manufacture the dermal filler Restylane, Macrolane uses the same NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilised Hyaluronic Acid) technology but in a thicker and more viscous gel. There are two products in the range; Macrolane VFR 20 and Macrolane VFR 30, which uses a higher concentration to achieve greater volume. The products can be used independently, or combined to effect maximum results.

Who will Benefit?

The treatment is most appropriate for women in the 30-60 year old age group, who have had children and lost volume and contour from the effects of breast feeding, for those who have experienced drastic weight loss and may need enhancement to counteract the effects, or for women who are showing the inevitable signs of ageing and need up-lift. It can sometimes be applied to women in their late teens, pre-pregnancy, who wish to increase small breasts from an A cup to a B or C, or a B cup, to a C or D.

How does it work?

An incision of 2-3mm is made in the crease under the breast, and the Macrolane is injected with a thin cannula (hollow needle) into the subcutaneous layer of tissue, above the muscle. The treatment site is numbed with a local anaesthetic prior to the procedure to minimise any discomfort, and the operation should take between 35-45 minutes to perform. Although the treatment is described as 'walk-in, walk-out', there will be some mild bruising, swelling and discomfort following the procedure and it is advised that a good support garment or sports bra is worn for 7-10 days to aid healing. The effects of the treatment can be seen immediately and should last from 12-18 months, although 'top-up' injections are recommended annually to maintain the volume.

How much does Macrolane cost?

It is strongly advised that only fully qualified cosmetic surgeons, with prior expertise in breast augmentation procedures, and bespoke training in Macrolane application, should be eligible to administer the treatment. Currently there are 24 practitioners in the UK who are fully trained and certified in its use, and prospective patients should request evidence of the appropriate accreditation before considering the procedure.

'Q Med' recommends that 100ml of Macrolane is used for each breast to achieve the optimum results, the current, average cost starting from £2,800 for the initial procedure and from £1,400 'top-up' treatments as needed.
