Cheapest Gastric Band Surgery Prices in the UK

Gastric Band Surgery in the UK

Obesity is a growing epidemic in the UK and is set to reach extreme levels in the next twenty years. Unfortunately, once the stage of obesity has been reached, it is very difficult to turn back the clock. Gastric band surgery offers obesity sufferers a chance to do just that and is an effective solution when all other methods, such as dieting and exercise, have failed. It is typically only recommended for the very overweight (morbidly obese).

Whilst gastric band surgery is effective and relatively safe (although there are risks associated with all major surgery), it is very expensive. For those not eligible to receive the surgery on the NHS, the costs can be prohibitive. However, as is the case with most things, bargains can be had if you know where to look.

What is Gastric Band Surgery?

Gastric band surgery is performed by Laparoscopy methods, where a surgical telescope connected to a mini video camera is inserted into the patient via a series of incisions in the skin. The aim of the operation is to reduce the size of the stomach by placing an inflatable band around the top portion of the stomach. Once the band is inflated, it creates a smaller upper and larger lower stomach.

Gastric band surgery results in the patient being able to consume far less food in one go and feel fuller quicker. Digested food is slowly filtered into the lower part of the stomach via the tiny gap left by the band. It then carries on its way as normal through the digestive tract. The highly reduced calorific intake results in immediate extreme weight-loss and long-term sustained results if aftercare guidance is adhered to.

Finding the Cheapest Gastric Band Prices in the UK

Whilst you can find competitive prices abroad for gastric band surgery, the recovery time and need for aftercare mean you will be more comfortable opting for a UK surgeon.
The cheapest place to obtain gastric band surgery in the UK is obviously the NHS, but their criteria are very strict, funds are limited and in some areas, the surgery is not available due to lack of funding.

Prices in the UK vary considerably, but a typical average cost for private surgery is in the region of £7000. Prices vary by area, BMI and by clinic, with the more prestigious clinics charging closer to £10000. The price includes up to two years aftercare but band re-inflation following the aftercare period is chargeable at approximately £80-£150.

Some clinics in the UK are offering prices as low as £5450 but do be aware that the aftercare period is only one month and reduced band refills. Cheaper surgery prices may also result in a higher charge for band refills, with one of the cheapest clinics for surgery charging £125 per refill.
