What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, or Lipoplasty, is a technique which specifically targets stubborn pockets of fat in the body, which have proved resistant to diet and exercise. A small incision is made into the treatment area and a cannula (small, hollow metal tube) is inserted into the fat layer. The fat cells are then removed with the use of a suction pump, leaving the area re-shaped and with more definition. Liposuction is appropriate for many areas of the body but achieves particularly effective results on the back, stomach and hips, thighs and buttocks. The procedure is not to be viewed as an alternative to conventional weight loss, it is not appropriate for those who are overweight or obese as there are limits to how much fat may be safely removed from the body, and in these circumstances the treatment would prove ineffective.
